Paediatric Treatments

A friend of mine told me about an experience treating a child in clinic.

A lovely woman brought her 2 year old son in for treatment. The child had a bit of a wheezy cough and also some skin issues: white pimple like appearances on the forearms.

Enquiries were made about diet and it turned out the kid was eating a lot of butter. Big chunks of it. Generally the diet was also influenced by rich fatty foods too!

So a Lung Phlegm and Spleen/Stomach stagnation diagnosis was made.

Some simple acupuncture technique was performed. Very quick shallow insertion and removal of the well known child points on the hand at the knuckle creases and due to the lung issue they did BL 13 (Lung point) with the same technique.

The child was needled in the mothers arms which I am sure was a very beautiful and privileged scene to witness! However only one hand was able to be done as my friend wasn’t quick enough after the child quickly recoiled and squashed up into his mum!

From the dispensary my friend found the following: Wangshi Baochiwan pills.

These are very cute tiny tiny patent pills for children. It is a well known pill for phlegm, asthma and cold in China.  It was advised for dosage to take one pill for every month of age, which I thought was cute. So about 24 tiny tiny pills a day. This could be split to morning and evening.

UTS Clinic Snap shots

I have four more patients to treat in clinic and then my clinic hours are complete. That's a total of 120 treatments on a Monday afternoon over 7 months.


I should reminisce more, but unfortunately I have to study for a statistics test... A proper overview will be done in a few days, but just to say that I really have developed and learnt a lot. It would be great to do more hours there to be honest! In the meantime here are some random shots of the clinic to keep you photo happy.

George in the Clinic

This is George.

He's studying the TCM course in the year below me. He's always great value and has an idea about everything. Being from China he's got some experience of how TCM works out there too. Once he showed me a scar on on his back at Bladder 13. This is where (in China) they made a cut and placed a small piece of chicken's gut in the incision when he was a child. It's a treatment for Asthma. True story.

Final Year Intern Clinic "Super"visor

The final year intern clinic supervisors are super helpful, super kind and put up with a super a lot. Imagine year after year of talking to newbies and listening to their opinions of what's wrong and right in a diagnosis and having to explain it back to them the right way!

I spoke to Chunlin and asked her how she did it? And her answer was a love of clinic. She loves being there helping patients, learning new things.

Packaging system at the base for cooked herbs

I found this decoction machine in 2009 when I was observing at the "Traditional Chinese Medicine Australia" clinic in Bondi Junction. I have realised know it's a bit more advanced than the most recent one I found. It has a packaging system at the base of it as well as two pressure cooking devices on the top.

2nd Fire Needle Treatment for Back Pain

Noam came back! He got a second treatment for back pain, two weeks later, using fire needle. We used a thicker needle this time for a stronger treatment. This is the consultation video. Treatment and explanation videos coming up. Also we did a blood letting treatment on the same day! Stay tuned to understand and find out more about the less widely used blood letting therapy!
